Six days ago, we were incredibly blessed to welcome our 8th child, our beautiful little girl, into the world . . . in the comfort of our own bedroom.

From the fullness of grace we have received one blessing after another. John 1:16

Her Birth Story:

Thursday, February 9th, 2012, my regular preparatory labor contractions (experienced for the week previous) got a bit stronger and more regular, signaling that labor was imminent. I was bound and determined to make it out to my book club meeting that night, and to officially reach 38 weeks in the pregnancy (midnight).

After a wonderful evening with my book club girls (with non-painful contractions every 4 minutes), I returned home at 11:00PM . . . we called the midwife at midnight. Sheryl arrived at 1:30 AM and I was experiencing slightly more intense contractions every 3 minutes. The next hour, Mike and I played cribbage as we enjoyed chatting and laughing with Sheryl. By 3:00, the contractions picked up in frequency and intensity. We packed up the cribbage board (I was winning!) to focus more on relaxing during the contractions. I felt spoiled, laying on my bed with my dear husband lovingly rubbing my back and Sheryl deeply massaging my legs to help the muscles relax during back-to-back contractions. At 3:30 AM, the contractions eased up and spaced out. I hopped in a hot shower to enjoy this unexpected respite, reflecting on how much I was enjoying the evening. I was having a great time. I was in labor!

After my shower, we all settled down to attempt a bit of sleep before labor inevitably picked back up (I was 7 cm dilated . . . on the verge of transition). Almost immediately, the contractions returned with vigor. I woke Mike after 4:00 AM and we labored together. He curled around me, held my hand, and breathed with me through each strong contraction, coming so frequently it was difficult to determine each start and end. Sheryl woke and prepared for delivery; patiently, calmly and lovingly watching and waiting.

The contractions were intense, it was obvious the moment of birth was fast approaching. I was free to follow my instinct, to push when the urge came. After 5:00 AM, my concentrated breathing through each hard contraction naturally transitioned to an extreme urge to push. From a kneeling position, my water broke and Mike set to catch his new baby. The head soon emerged, but then baby got hung up, the shoulders stuck. Sheryl quickly acted and skillfully maneuvered the shoulders to allow the baby to be delivered. This was an intense ending to a beautiful birth. After 4 hours of labor (2 hours of strong labor) and about 5 minutes pushing, our perfect baby girl was born into her daddy's hands at 5:19 AM, February 10, 2012.

It was a gift to snuggle with my new little sweetheart and my husband in our bed moments after her birth, completely in love. She was absolutely perfect. Maclaren was slightly purple in the face after her being hung up in delivery, but gave a beautiful gusty cry after birth. She was slightly jittery and needed a bit of help warming up, an easy fix: Maclaren and I enjoyed a warm herbal bath together, where I nursed my little one. I ate too, Mike serving me orange juice and pumpkin bread.

By 6:30, the linens had been changed, and we were back in bed under heaps of blanket snuggling and admiring our beautiful girl. "Mommy! Daddy!", at 7:00 AM Kolpin cried out and joined our party in bed . . . followed quickly by Burke and Tesfaye, who then ran and woke the other kids. The kids all crowded around, so excited and in awe of their new baby sister.
It was wonderful to celebrate her arrival with all of our children.

This birth was an incredible experience, a true blessing. As our other 7 kids slept soundly, we labored together in our own home, in our own bed, with the loving support of our amazing midwife. This was my hardest and most intense labor and delivery (Maclaren was a full pound bigger than my last two babies), but I was loved and cared for through each contraction as my body worked as designed to birth our sweet baby. I am incredibly thankful for this perfect experience and the amazing gift of a sweet little girl.

Big Brother

Our almost 8-year-old . . . eldest of 8.

Hendrick is truly the best big brother.

Yes, he can be aggressive and is often frustrated with his younger siblings . . .
but he is also incredibly quick to help out, and very loving and caring to them.
He takes a lot of pride in his roll as big brother.

Three years ago, our sweet boy was praying for a new baby

God answers prayers!

Hendrick was so excited to get a baby for his 8th birthday.
He desperately prayed this baby would arrive ON his birthday.
First on his Birthday Wish List: baby, followed by Lego spinners and baseball cards.

Little Girl arrived 4 days early :)

He has been telling everyone that this IS his baby.
He has informed us he will be taking care of the baby:
holding, rocking, feeding, dressing, bathing, burping . . . everything but changing diapers :)

Can you believe it?. . . I'm still Pregnant!!!!

Praise God!
I am incredibly thankful to have reached 38 weeks in this pregnancy!

Hendrick had been hoping for a Birthday Baby - His birthday is in 4 days :)

*For someone with a history of pre-term labor and delivery, who has never carried past 37 weeks,
reaching 38 weeks is quite an accomplishment. We are thrilled!
Plus I've had the pleasure to fully enjoy non-bedrest late pregnancy for an entire week :)

Baby has dropped and I have been experiencing preparatory labor for the past week . . .
dilated to 4 cm and having non-intense/ non-painful contractions every 5-15 minutes.
Baby could make its appearance at anytime. Very exciting :)

Outside

Taking advantage of our mild February weather and post-bedrest freedom, we have enjoyed daily neighborhood walks!
(As an added bonus, these walks are helping Amy to regain some of the strength and stamina lost during 6 weeks of bedrest).

It is so nice to be outside!

Wheelbarrow

Grandpa was a good therapist . . . Davis worked hard last week perfecting his "wheelbarrow"!
This is a wonderful stretch and strengthening workout for his right wrist.
It's not easy for our boy, but he get's stronger each time.

Round Belly

Derby Race

One of the annual highlights of Cub Scouts: the Pinewood Derby race!

This year, our two scouts, Hendrick and Tesfaye, worked really hard on their racing creations. They designed their own car shapes, assisted in the cutting, and spent two days sanding them smooth.

We were so fortunate to have Grandpa with us for the week to help guide the boys in the finishing of their vehicles: paint, decals, weights and wax. Hendrick created a "flame" car, Tesfaye's was a "space" vehicle.

They were so proud of their cars - and rightfully so!

The derby race is a wonderful opportunity to learn the valuable lesson: it doesn't matter if you win or lose, just have fun!
While our boys entered the race full of the highest expectations, reality hit quickly - lots of cars racing and only one winner. They may not have had the fastest cars, but they came away from the day of racing beaming with excitement, proud of their hard work, and pleased to participate in such a special event.

It was a winning day!

We thoroughly enjoyed our very special time with Grandpa (Amy's Dad), who so generously returned to spend a second week with us to help while Amy was on her final week of bed rest.
He pampered us with special meals, special treats, special games, special outings . . . and, kept house!

He's pretty incredible!

The Bump - 37 weeks

Praise God - we have made it FULL-TERM!
BED REST IS OVER!!!!

*This is the second longest I have ever been pregnant, 3 of my 5 babies were born pre-term.
4 more days and this will be the longest pregnancy I've ever had!
The longer the better :)

The kids have asked each morning: "did the baby come?"

What I've done to help prolong this pregnancy:

. 6 weeks of bed rest . nightly Epsom salt baths . magnesium supplements .
. 17P progesterone shots and natural progesterone cream . double dose of Super Food daily .
. soy lecithin for baby's lungs . maternity support belt to lift weight off pelvis .
. Mother's Choice Carry On (to prevent contractions) .
. cramp bark capsules (to stop contractions) .
. 4 quarts of water daily . extra weight gain (35+ pounds) .

. and, as a last resort - a glass of wine .

Birth Plan

*Childbirth is hard work (it is called "labor"). Childbirth can be intense. Medical interventions are sometimes necessary. In these instances, we are incredibly thankful for their existence and for trained medical expertise. The ultimate goal in any childbirth is to protect the baby and mother.

God designed the female body to bear young.

Remember this, for it is as true as true gets: Your body is not a lemon.
You are not a machine. The creator is not a careless mechanic.

It's incredible to watch the changes that occur in the female body during pregnancy. For 9 months, she is transformed to be the perfect housing for a growing baby. During the relatively short labor period, her body undertakes the most dramatic physical changes that occur in humans: more movement, more shape-changing of various organs, more prolonged physical sensation, and considerably more effort that do other physiological functions of the body. Childbirth is an amazing miracle.

Ideally, the process of welcoming a new baby into the world is one of excited anticipation, intimacy, comfort, and relaxation. But all too often this is a time of fear and anxiety, starting a dangerous cycle: fear and anxiety can stall the natural labor process, causing more pain than is necessary, which then leads to more fear and anxiety.

Childbirth is, unfortunately, almost always portrayed in media as a very intense and dramatic medical emergency. These are also the stories we all to often hear,"pregnancy horror stories".
Labor and deliver do not have to be this way!
Women need to remember their bodies are designed for childbirth!

It's important for women to do their own research and make their own decision regarding the birth of their child. We have chosen Home Birth as our first choice for welcoming our baby. This was a decision made after lots of prayer, seeking of guidance, and research. We believe this is the safest and most ideal plan for our family and situation. For healthy women, low at risk for complications, with the care of a skilled and experienced midwife, studies have shown that home birth is just as safe if not safer than hospital birth, and with fewer medical interventions.

With a home birth, labor and delivery occur in the comfort and privacy of the home, without interruptions of medical staff, with the undivided attention of a caring and sensitive midwife. We desire to keep the birth experience as natural as possible, allowing the body to work as it was designed.

A midwife-attended birth gives a woman a measure of control generally unavailable with a physician - the freedom to move, eat, bathe, or whatever else might help her labor and birth more confidently. The role of a midwife is to monitor labor, guiding and supporting the birthing woman safely through the birth process. For many women, care with a midwife allows them to birth their way, safely and naturally, supported by the people they love. (http://mana.org)

The percentage of US births attended by midwives: 7%
The percentage of US home births: 0.675 % (approximately 13% of those being unplanned)

I feel privileged to be working with a skilled and wise midwife for this pregnancy - she is carrying on an ancient tradition. Midwives have been caring for women for as long as we know, often known as wise women (the English "midwife" is from "with-women")

After a very hard delivery, the midwife finally exclaimed, "Don't be afraid - you have another son!". Genesis 35:17

But because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king's orders. They allowed the boys to live, too. . . So God was good to the midwives, and the Israelites continued to multiply, growing more and more powerful. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own. Exodus 1:17-21

I am so thankful to be able to participate in the incredible miracle of childbirth.
We look forward to welcoming our precious child into this world.
(hopefully in the comfort of our own home:)

*We are not at all opposed to seeking medical intervention if deemed necessary. We have a hospital transfer plan in place if needed. We have a wonderful backing OB who has been very supportive of our plan and is ready to help should we need his assistance. We will not be delivering at home until we reach 37 weeks in the pregnancy. Prior to 37 weeks, we will deliver in a hospital where advanced medical care is readily available if needed.

School - Month 5

Couch school has been a break from the norm, necessitated by Amy's bed rest. We are pleased to have been able to continue schooling during this challenging time - thanks to the help we've had during the day watching kids and extra prep from Mike, our school principal and Superintendent. He has been prepping school each night, setting lesson plans and gathering books and supplies into bins couch-side and setting up the coffee table, helping Amy achieve school success during the day while laying down.

Our Fifth Month:

History: we dove into more Reformation learning, following the spread of the Reformation throughout Europe (Netherlands, Scandinavia, England) and Protestant and Counter Reformation . We learned about England's split from the Catholic church lead by King Henry VIII and inspired by his drive for an heir (6 wives: divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived) . We then learned of his well-loved daughter Queen Elizabeth I (Good Queen Bess) and her successful and long reign during period known as Elizabethan England. Queen Elizabeth I, was a strong supporter of the arts. We've been learning about the prolific talent of William Shakespeare and success of the Globe theater and it's Kings Men.

Science: We learned more about Rocks: rock identification, gems, minerals and mining (the boys mined for chocolate chips in a cookie using a toothpick tool, learning how difficult it is to extract precious minerals)

Math: Hendrick working on Multiplication, Davis flying through the beginning of his Alpha Math-U-See, and Tesfaye trying really hard to figure out the missing numeral in addition problems.

Art: the boys have created beautiful Tapestry Art, Church Mosaic art, and Stained glass window art In their color studies, they've mixed and learned about tertiary colors and color temperature (warm and cool)

Bible: we've been reading about Jacob and Esau, praising God for the ultimate plan and promises He has for each of our lives and for our new connection to God in Heaven, our "stairwell", Jesus.

Reading: a perfect couch activity! Together we've been reading Shakespeare plays - they especially love the comedies.

Davis is starting to branch out from his phonics learning to read beginner reader books - very exciting! Tesfaye is making great progress in his phonics lessons and has shown a great capacity for learning sight words. Hendrick has taken full advantage of this slower-pace school to tear through stacks and stacks of books. His current favorite series: Captain Underpants, How to Train Your Dragon, Magic School Bus, Spiderwick Chronicles, and A-Z Mysteries.

The boys have also kept busy with lots of puzzles, board games and logic games.
*Burke has been joining in on a lot more school this month!

We are planning to take a month off school when the new baby arrives. Most likely, two full-weeks off after baby, then 4 weeks of half-school as we transition to our new normal.

Square One

Home schooling is rewarding and fun, but it is not easy.
Teaching children at home can frustrating, stressful, and at times, overwhelming! It's not easy to balance housework, child care, and school work - and it's challenging to prioritize and schedule our time accordingly. It often seems as though there are not enough hours in the day and that we are always leaving something undone.

That said, I am incredibly grateful to be blessed with schooling my children at home. I love having my children together with me each day. I love learning, teaching, experimenting, creating, and exploring with them. I love watching them work hard to master new lessons and seeing that "light-bulb" when they finally "get it!". I love seeing them help each other and grow their relationships.

Home schooling an older adopted child poses its own challenges.

Tesfaye arrived home as a 5-year-old. He had been attending school for 6 months while living in an orphanage in Ethiopia. This schooling had been in Amharic, the language of Addis Ababa. Sweet child worked hard in his school, but struggled. Before the orphanage, Tesfaye spoke Sidamigna, which is not a written language.

We began Tesfaye in "kindergarden" when he arrived home in April 2011, working with him through the summer to prepare him for the coming school year. Our focus was mainly attachment/ bonding and language (full immersion language learning) - all critical for his success in schooling and in life. We quickly realized we were starting at square one in a lot of areas.

Now that we are half-way through our school year, Tesfaye is doing exceptionally well, especially considering where we started. It is mind boggling to think we have a 6-year-old child who is learning his third language! He has had to adapt to so many new things, but he is eager to succeed and a very determined and dedicated worker. Still, school is a challenge for him.

We find new challenges in our schooling each day . . . it goes beyond language barrier. Comprehension and lack of basic pattern recognition cause struggles in nearly every school subject. We have been working to grow his understanding and skills, and make the learning fun by reading picture books, acting out words, hands on learning, logic games, puzzle building, coloring, matching, and copying.

Tesfaye has made incredibly huge progress, but we have found sweet boy is a bit too quick to say "I got it", desperately wanting to be successful. He's a smart cookie, possesses amazing adaptive ability, and is very skilled at sliding by without true understanding. We have quickly learned that "I got it" does not necessarily mean he does.

Home schooling is perfect for Tesfaye. We are able to work closely with Tesfaye to make sure he is truly understanding the teaching. If one method doesn't seem to work, we can alter our approach to meet Tesfaye's needs and help him to achieve success in learning. Not being on a strict time schedule helps too. We are so grateful for the one-on-one work and flexibility home schooling enables. And, we've loved watching Hendrick and Davis helping and encouraging Tesfaye.

We are so proud of Tesfaye's growth, accomplishments and achievements in school. It's amazing to see how far he has come in such a short time. He is nearly at a first-grade level, which is quite impressive considering the challenges and struggles and barriers he has had to work through. He's a hard-worker and a smart boy!

Sheepy

Maegli has a fuzzy constant companion - they have been inseparable for the past 2-1/2 years. "Sheepy" (sometimes called "Lamby") shares a bed and goes everywhere with Maegli.
Sheepy was with Maegli for her first steps, is the perfect snuggler, has been dragged around and pushed around in strollers, goes on every trip, has been washed (bathed) countless times, and loves to be dressed up.

Sheepy is a 24" square, comfy cozy plush lamb blanket lovey by Gund.

We are currently on Sheepy II, the first Sheepy was lost on the streets of Philadephia. Poor girl cried herself to sleep each night until Sheepy II arrived in the mail. We learned our lesson - Sheepy III is waiting in the closet, just in case :)

Skills

Tesfaye has been gifted with natural athletic talent - boy has skills!

Soccer is definitely his best and favorite sport. He grew up playing village football with a banana leaf ball - now he is proud to show off his fancy footwork on the soccer field.
He took immediately to the game of baseball - impressing all with his amazing throwing arm and seemingly impossible ball catches.
Tesfaye is effortlessly able to pick up practically every sport with ease.

We recently took the boys to see a basketball game at Union University to cheer on the Lady Bulldogs. Tesfaye had never seen basketball before in his life, but while watching decided he would like to play basketball. "I like play basketball. I like people lots watch me!" The boy liked the idea of having an audience!
At half-time, children were invited onto the court to play. Tesfaye immediately ran onto the court, grabbed a ball, dribbled, and started shooting. He had NEVER played or watched basketball before in his life and he was dribbling the ball! He quickly mastered shooting a basket, so turned around to challenge himself with a backwards shot. THREE times he threw the ball over his head and into the hoop for a backwards basket!!!

He is amazing to watch.
God has blessed our boy with some serious athletic skills!

Temporary

Bed rest is hard on everyone: Amy is stuck on the couch, Mike is working double duty, and the kids have had their whole world turned upside down. Our past five weeks have not been normal!
Fortunately this time is temporary.
We have had a lot of special people coming in to help us - it's been truly incredible!

We have been completely dependent on outside help from friends and family. People have come every day to care for our children, clean our house, and deliver meals - wow!
We are extremely grateful for this much needed help.

The outside help has been necessary and has been incredibly special and fun. It's been good: they have received lots of special attention and treats, and have grown even closer to each other . . . but it's still stressful (and mom is still on the couch!). No matter how good and special, a deviation from the norm is bound to be stressful on the children. The stress manifests itself in different ways.

Our constant, content, calm and joyful boy Kolpin has been incredibly fussy at nap time and has been obstinate, refusing and saying "no" to practically everything.
Sweet, joyful, ballerina girl Maegli, actually laid on the floor during dance class refusing to move.
Hiwot, who has come so far and grown so much, has reverted a bit: crying at the drop of a hat and being incredibly snuggly and shy with new visitors
Our typically charming Burke has been a dramatic roller coaster - quickly moving from super sweet to lashing out at siblings and caregivers.
Poor Davis has become very clumsy: constantly getting hurt, tending to trip more, running into obstacles, and managing to spill his beverage at every meal.
Hendrick and Tesfaye, our big boys and our helpers, have become expert show-offs, going "wild" whenever a new person drops by: scaling furniture, noisy pillow fights, and scooter wars.

These changes in the kids behavior is inevitable during this deviation, and fortunately this time (while necessary) is temporary. It will be nice to get back to a more normal schedule, but realistically it will be a while.

For now, we'll enjoy this change from the norm - incredibly grateful for the generous help, extra care and spoiling.

The Bump - 36 weeks

For 36 weeks, our prayer has been "please help this baby grow strong and healthy, and inside!"
Now we are prayerfully preparing for the arrival of this sweet babe.
Still hoping for at least one more week!

It's amazing to remember that God already intimately knows this sweet child.
God knit this precious babe together.
God knows boy or girl, He knows the name, and He has a plan for this precious life.

We can't wait to get to know this little one too!

Loss and Gain

One year ago . . .
We were in Ethiopia, to attend a court hearing which legally declared Hiwot and Tesfaye as our children.

They have added so much to our family and so much to our lives. We are so thankful God blessed our family with these precious kids. They have been home with us for 9 months - their lives have changed dramatically (so have ours :)

Hiwot and Tesfaye joining our family is a tale of loss and gain. They have lost an old life, but gained a new one: lost their birth home, but gained a forever home; lost their first family, but have gained a new family; lost a language, but gained a new one.
We pray God will give these precious kids peace and comfort as they continue to deal with these significant losses and gains throughout their lives.

English has replaced their original languages. It's truly amazing how quickly they have learned English, and incredibly sad (but inevitable) how fast they have lost Amharic and Sidamigna. We are thankful we have adopted a smattering of words, a mix of both languages, into our everyday.

We've been talking a lot about babies in our household, preparing for the arrival of our new little one. Hiwot and I had a conversation the other day, I was curious if she remembered ever seeing a newborn baby. Hiwot doesn't have a lot of memories from her first home in Sidama, but she remembered more than we expected about babies.

(This is her telling. These are her memories. In the memories of a little one, the line between reality and fiction is a bit blurred :)

Stretch!

Three months post Surgery, the range of motion in Davis' right wrist is AMAZING! We are down to one Occupational Therapy session per week (dropped down from 3 per week). Davis is working hard to strengthen and stretch the tendons in his wrist: he climbs a rock wall, leans onto a table with his weight on the right hand palm, he moves his hand side-to-side to cover and reveal hidden objects, and can support his weight as a "wheel barrow" for several steps. He works everyday at home on his stretches, each day they are get a bit easier and are less painful.

We are incredibly proud of how hard Davis is working and how much progress he has made.
Davis is proud to show off his new range of motion, demonstrating to people how he can hold his hand out straight - something he has never been able to do before. It's truly amazing.

We are so thankful for the success of the surgery. We praise God for the incredible healing of Davis' wrist.

Coloring Music

The other day, a good friend generously volunteered to get the kids out of the house and take them to a special "Color of Music" class. The kids were set up with paint and were directed to paint the music.

Apparently Hiwot was incredibly focused on this task, feeling the music and painting while in her own little world. She created a beautiful work of art :)

We have been incredibly blessed to have Grandpa (Amy's dad) stay with us for the week.
Grandpa bravely and expertly took charge while Amy has been on bed rest, spoiling us all for the week. It's hard to be stuck on the couch.

Life is happening around me.
The kids need help.
The kids need attention.
The kids need their mom.

It's hard to be stuck on the couch.

My husband is working double time.
I am not able to play my part.
I wish I could do more.
It's hard needing help.

But, I am doing my job.
Right now, my job is to stay on the couch.
I am doing what I can to keep precious babe inside as long as possible.
Every day counts. Each and every day is better for this baby.

I am eager for bed rest to be over. I am eager to be a mom again. I am eager to be a wife again. I am eager to help my kids. I am eager to help my spouse. I am eager to pick up my children, dance and run and play. I am eager to cook for my family. I am eager to take care of my house.

But for now, I'm stuck on the couch.
Hoping to be stuck on the couch for 20 more days.

We are incredibly grateful for the generous help provided by our family and friends during this time!
I guess I should just enjoy this restful break :)

Whisper Talk

Kolpin's language has really taken off this past month.

Our incredibly sweet, affectionate, compliant and quiet child has always communicated very well using a baby signs, head nods, and expressive eye brows. Recently, he has added verbal language to his effective communication.

Sweet Kolpin whispers.

Kolpin is constantly making sounds in a sweet sing-song whisper - whether puppy dog whimpers, super hero battle sounds, or race car vrooms. He repeats most everything: words, songs and phrases, whispering sweetly followed by a giggle - apparently thinking either our talking or his repeating incredibly funny.
He also has his own words and phrases. In addition to the basic words and animal names and sounds, he will sweetly request: "jacket off", "help me", "watch this", "open this please", "fix it", "more food please", "water please". He points out "right here"; sings "winnie the pooh" as he makes his "pooh bear" jump on the floor; plays with his most prized toy, labeling it "race car - vroom"; whimpers and states "ow, hurt me" when inured; and he'll point to his pants and say "diaper" when he needs a change.

We love hearing his sweet sing-song whisper!

*Kolpin has also decided he is done with his high chair, much preferring to sit at the table with everyone else - we like him there too!

Motivation

Hendrick knows what he wants and is willing to work hard for it.

We compensate the children for doing chores around the house. It helps everyone: we have enthusiastic helpers willing to work hard (we certainly need the help!), and the kids are able to earn money while learning valuable money lessons. The money is kept in their individual piggy banks until enough is saved for the much anticipated trip to the toy store. (They count stacks of quarters regularly so they are always aware of their money status.) When it's time for spending, they put aside some money to give (tithe), some money to save, and always make sure they have enough to cover tax (government).

Hendrick recently has been working hard to earn money for Ninjago Lego Spinners. He is amassing quite the collection of spinners and cards. He looks up how much money is required to purchase the desired addition, setting his goal, and then gets very busy, asking for the biggest jobs. He'll wash windows, pull weeds, rake out garden beds, hang and sort laundry, load and empty the dishwasher, and fold all Kolpin's clothes. It's so nice to have a motivated worker.

He is so pleased to be able to purchase his own toys. (He is currently working hard to earn money for his next set :)

We're proud of our hardworking, money saving, goal setting boy!

*Some chores are unpaid, expected and required of everyone: making their own bed each morning, folding and putting away their own laundry, cleaning up their own toys and messes. (And if Mom or Dad ask for something to be done, they are expected to do it!)

We pay work work that benefits everyone and is above and beyond (payment based on time required for the task): setting and clearing the entire dining table ($0.25 ea.), emptying and loading the dishwasher ($1.00), hanging up wet laundry and sorting dry laundry ($1.00), washing the windows ($2.00), raking leaves ($1.00 per pile including transporting pile to woods), vacuuming the first floor ($0.50), sweeping the floor ($0.25), organizing the toy and book shelves ($1.00-2.00).

Hiwot and Maegli typically earn $0.50-1.00 ea. per week, Davis and Burke typically earn $1-2.50 ea. per week, Tesfaye and Hendrick work the hardest and earn $3 - 6.00 ea. per week . . . it's well work every penny, the help they provide is priceless!

FOUR Months into our 2011/2012 school year!!!
90+ days of school completed - more than half-way!!!!

*The boys worked hard this past month, continuing through the holidays - we've pushed them along knowing we'll be taking nearly a month off school when the new babe arrives. We have been intentional to make the "holiday school" extra fun: lots of reading, logic games, puzzles and Lego building, art projects, science experiments, presentation boards, and math lessons (which they love!).

This past month:

We continued our study of Renaissance Europe, focusing on exploration. We followed the journeys of Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan and Amerigo Vespucci; continuing on to learn about the peoples living in South and Central America: making salt dough maps of the regions and learning the sad fate of Moctezuma and the Aztecs. Did you know some of the Aztec gold was recently discovered under Mexico City during the building of a subway tunnel? We also read several of Shakespeare's works and began our transition to the Reformation with learning of Martin Luther's 95 Theses.

Other school learning:

In Science, we are learning more about Earth: the three layers of the earth (core, mantle, crust), rock types, and glaciers. The boys have had fun hunting for rocks in the backyard to study.
In art, the boys have been creating fabulous sculptures!

Davis and Tesfaye are making good progress with their reading lessons. We're really hoping to have them reading independently very soon!
Hendrick proudly memorized Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" poem!
Davis has completed his Primer Math-u-See curriculum and is flying through the beginning Alpha lessons.
Tesfaye, after much work and struggle, has finally mastered counting from 0-100!!!
Hendrick continued to work through the multiplication table.

Mike told Tesfaye we were listening to bluegrass music. He asked "Daddy you blue paint grass?"

Mike put a pair of tights on Hiwot's head, making deer antlers from the tight legs. Maegli now calls those tights "Hiwot's horny clothes."

Burke singing: "He knows if you've been bad or good, so it makes a good mistake. Oh, you better watch out . . . "

Burke: "Dad, if you don't stop singing, I'm going to jump out the window." Thanks buddy!

Family Holiday

We are blessed to celebrate an extended Christmas with family! Gramma and Grandpa (Amy's parents) traveled to Tennessee to spend a few days with our gaggle and celebrate the Holidays.

We had an wonderful time and were thoroughly spoiled - Gramma and Grandpa certainly stayed busy! The kids enjoyed outings to the bowling ally and Fun Zone jumpers, neighborhood walks, new movies and books, remote control car races, magic tricks, backyard soccer (enjoying our 60+ degree temperatures), sharing of gifts, delicious baked goodies and holiday dinner. Gramma and Grandpa also took care of absolutely everything with the kids and around the house, which is no small feat, allowing Amy to rest on the couch (let's keep that baby in!).
Bonus: Mike and Amy were able to get away for a Birthday date night!

Christmas morning was full of excitement at our house.
After Church and a Christmas Eve Jesus Birthday celebration (cake), the kids were eager to get to bed in anticipation of the next day.
They woke, practically jumping with enthusiasm, and raced to open the wrapped baby Jesus from the nativity set (our first gift of Christmas). We read the Biblical Christmas story together and hung our final Jesse Tree ornament. The kids were thrilled to discover gifts in their stockings and were overjoyed to unwrap presents from under the tree. Opening Christmas gifts with seven kids is very exciting!
The remainder of the day was spent building new Lego sets, setting up hot-wheel tracks, dressing-up, and playing our new family games.
Christmas dinner was shared with our church family and local homeless guests - it was a blessing to share a meal together.

We had a very fun weekend of celebration!

We are 31 weeks (7-months)

31 weeks has been a big milestone in recent pregnancies . . . Davis was born at 31 weeks.
We are thankful for God's protection over our son Davis.

We are praying to carry this newest little one many more weeks :)

I am not currently on an official "bedrest", I'm on the "be-smart-and-take-it-super-easy rest".
I am staying off my feet as much as possible, covering this little one in prayers, and taking herbs to calm irregular contractions.
Our official "bedrest" is planned to begin in two weeks.

Keeping Christ

In Ethiopia, the Christmas holiday (celebrated on January 7th) is stripped down to it's pure essence. There is no Santa, decorated trees, stockings or snowmen . . . Christmas is celebrated as a religious holiday. People gather in churches for half-day worship services, the remainder of the day is spent in family celebration: dancing, singing, playing sports and feasting together (doro wat). No one is distracted by the holiday hoopla we allow to consume our lives.

Last year in the orphanage, Hiwot and Tesfaye were, for the first time in their lives, exposed to Santa. The compound security guard donned a Santa suit to introduce the kids to this American Christmas tradition, to help with their transitioning to American culture and celebration. We have heard stories of children arriving home in America questioning why Santa didn't come to Ethiopia, and why Jesus isn't celebrated at Christmas. The American Christmas traditions seem so far removed from the pure essence of the holiday.

We asked Tesfaye how he celebrated Christmas in Sidama. He replied that they didn't celebrate Christmas . . . he then clarified that they didn't have a Christmas tree in Sidama, so they didn't have Christmas. They walked to church and ate good food together. We have much to learn from our children and the culture they bring into our home: Christmas should not be about the decorations, Christmas should be a celebration of Christ: the amazing gift of love from God.

We hope to preserve a Christ focus these holiday celebrations.

Early Christmas

We were really glad to be able to celebrate an early Christmas with Grandpa (Mike's Dad) over the weekend. We will miss seeing our families over the holidays, unable to travel due to the pregnancy, so really treasured this early celebration with Grandpa.

On Saturday evening, we braved the low temperatures and traveled to Memphis to enjoy Zoo Lights - it was magical night at the zoo amidst spectacular lights, free tram rides, and hot cocoa. While at the zoo, we had another opportunity to chat with St. Nicholas (who informed us that when people call him "St. Nicholas" he says he is from Greece, if called "Santa Claus" he says he's from Atlanta and the Coca-Cola Company :)

Sunday, we celebrated together with a few early Christmas gifts. The kids excitement was too fun :) They were literally bouncing off the walls! The kids were thrilled to give their hand-painted ornaments to Grandpa. The big boys spent the remainder of the day playing with their new building sets (and have spent many hours since building new creations - awesome!).
*Grandpa also fixed and refinished our treasured (30+ year-old) indoor wood slide as a special gift.

Nutcracker

I had the absolute pleasure of taking my little ballerinas to see a live Nutcracker performance; a special girls night out!
The girls selected their most twirly dresses to wear and were giddy with anticipation before the show. After the orchestra began the familiar Tchaikovsky suite and the curtain was raised, Maegli was absolutely enthralled, on the edge of her seat for the entire performance. Hiwot sat in my lap, dancing along copying each arm movement, and asking if it was a movie :)

After the show, we purchased souvenir ornaments: Hiwot said she liked the Nutcracker best, Maegli's favorite was Clara. I hope they'll remember their first stage ballet fondly in the coming years as we bring out these special ornaments each Christmas.

Christmas Parade

We LOVE that our little town has a Christmas Parade each year.
(not just a "Holiday" parade, an actual "Christmas" parade!)

The big boys love that their cub scout pack builds and rides on a float each year.
(They won 1st place in the scout division this year!). It's a big deal to be in a real parade!

The rest of the kids love being out late and watching floats, bands, dancers, and emergency vehicles (the sirens surprised Hiwot) all while gathering lots of candy!

Saint Nicholas

Happy Saint Nicholas Day!!!

We love Saint Nicholas and the wonderful example of generous giving in the name of God he lived. We celebrate his legacy on St. Nick's Day . . . and we focus on Jesus' Birthday at Christmas.

Saint Nicholas lived during the 3rd century in Patara (now a part of modern Turkey). His wealthy parents raised him to be a devout Christian. After their deaths, Nicholas dedicated his life to serving God, becoming the Bishop of Myra, and used his inheritance to help others. Bishop Nicholas became well known for his generosity to those in need and his love for children. He suffered religious persecution under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, and died on December 6, AD 343. Which is why we remember Saint Nicholas each year on December 6th.

The extraordinary person of Saint Nicholas has been transformed into legend over the centuries, depicting Nicholas as a gift giver. Along the way, the kindly Christian saint, Bishop Nicholas, became a roly-poly red-suited American symbol for merry holiday festivity: jolly Santa Claus supplying luxuries to the affluent in America.

We celebrate Saint Nicholas, a generous man who put Jesus at the center of his life and ministry. As lover of the poor and patron saint of children, Nicholas is a model of how Christians are meant to live. Embracing the true story of Saint Nicholas is one way our family tries to keep the birth of Jesus at the center of our Christmas celebrations.

Snow?

Hiwot and Tesfaye have been talking about snow for a long time . . . since their arrival home in April! I assume they learned of snow during their time in the orphanage (snow is not something they would have ever experienced before). This mysterious cold white stuff that falls to the ground has them very excited.
We have done our part to add to their excitement with talks of sled riding, snow ball fights, snowmen and snow angels, and (of course) snow ice cream!
Unfortunately, we don't get a lot of snow in Tennessee. We are lucky to get 3 snowfalls each year, and the snow typically doesn't stay on the ground for long.

We were shocked last week when low and behold, near constant rainfall turned into snow flurries! Hiwot and Tesfaye were practically beside themselves. They ran outside, mouths opened wide to catch the big flakes. They got incredibly wet, as it was a rain/snow mix. This early snow didn't stick at all at our house, the yard was just a wet and muddy mess, but Tesfaye wanted to sled and Hiwot begged to make snow ice cream. Fortunately they were too fascinated by the magical snowflakes to be disappointed in our being unable to do much with these first flurries.

We too should be constantly excited and in awe of God's magical creations.

I truly hope we get a few good snowfalls this winter for these kids to enjoy!
And, I really wish we had captured a picture of our sweet kids soaking wet outside trying to catch those snowflakes.

With the temperature dropping unseasonably low (allowing for our few snow flurries), we asked Tesfaye if Sidama was ever this cold (knowing full well that the temperature in Ethiopia ranges from 45cto 80 degrees). He surprised us by answering that it was COLDER in Sidama. . . then clarified that in Sidama they had no coats to help keep warm.

A reminder of how incredibly blessed we are to have coats to keep warm when the temperature drops.

4 years ago . . .

Mike arrived home with a little bundle in tow: he had traveled half-way around the world to pick up, carry, and deliver our third son to our family. Our little boy was 10-1/2 months old, 17 pounds, and dressed in pink. Amy was at home anxiously waiting to hold her new little boy, 30 weeks pregnant and unable to travel.

Burke came into our home with a hoarse voice (from 10 hours of crying on the airplane) and big smile. Our little charmer; he's been charming our hearts ever since. He has added so much excitement to our family and has enriched our lives.

Our Burkey Boy does all things big. Burke loves an audience: he is our actor, performer, play-leader, singer, character-acting director, boundless energy, movie-buff, and silly-sound maker. Burke is also our unpredictable "wild-card". He has a tendency for drama! (we never know how he'll react in a public setting, he has his extremes). Burke is also our affectionate boy and sweet snuggler, saying dear compliments and beautiful prayers.

We are madly in love with our son Burke. We are so thankful God placed him in our family 4-years ago. Our lives have been blessed.

School - Month 3

Our Third Month in the 2011-2012 school year at Parvae Vitae Academy:

We have ended Medieval Europe with Joan of Arc, the Hundred Years War between England and France (and sending our own secret messages with invisible ink), Post-Plague Europe and end of Feudal System, celebrating the end with our own Medieval Feast (a 4-course meal complete with trenchers, gilded apples, hard boiled eggs, cheese, makerouns, herb salad, and fruit fritters - - - we ate without forks, wiped faces with our hands and our hands on the bread, we belched and pretended to spit on the floor!)
Then we learned of Gutenberg's fabulous printing press invention helping to usher in the Renaissance period. We made salt dough maps of Renaissance Italy and we began our studies of Renaissance greats, starting with the Medici Family and Leonardo DaVinci (the age of discovery with patrons and artists, scientists, and explorers).

In science, we finished our learning of the 8 planets in our solar system, figured out our weight on each planet and are now focusing on space exploration, astronauts and NASA. The boys loved watching videos of space shuttle launches!
For art, we have had fun with different media: chalk for Egyptian floor art, clay carved into Mesopotamian bass-relief wall sculptures and painted, and forming clay into Greek painted pottery pieces.
We have hit a light bulb break-through in Math for T with skip-counting and time-telling. D is working on subtraction and skip-counting and H is continuing his work through the multiplication chart: 3s and 9s (we've finished - 0, 1, 2, 5, 10).

This month we are hitting the library books hard, trying to keep our voracious reader well-equipped, and enjoying new read-alouds with the other 6. D and T are making great progress in their phonics work and are starting to move into basic beginner readers.

We've been busy with school, but enjoyed a relaxing Thanksgiving break at home. We discussed the history behind the holiday and the importance of expressing our gratitude and thanks. The kids all helped decorate for our Thanksgiving feast shared with friends and area homeless.
Then, we got a head start on Christmas. The kids helped to decorate our home and are excited to celebrate Jesus' Birthday!

We're hoping to get in another strong month of school before we break to celebrate Christmas, anticipating a month of bedrest after the New Year (in preparation for the baby). We'd love to be half-way done with our school year (180 days) before the New Year. Let's go boys!

Where's Mine?

Decorating for Christmas was extra exciting this year, it being the first time for Hiwot and Tesfaye to decorate (they were amazed by our tree from a box). All the kids have fun setting up Nativity scenes and decorating our tree - it can be a bit crazy with 7 eager helpers. It's always a treat to remember Christmas' past and years gone by as we pull out the handmade ornaments (we make ornaments each year) - I especially love all the little baby handprints forever remembered on our tree. The kids all want to know as each ornament is pulled out "who's is this?" and get so excited to hang their own.

Sweet Hiwot was very quick to recognize she didn't have any handprints on our tree. "Where's mine?" We have a few ornaments made last Christmas for Hiwot and Tesfaye as we were praying them home, but they have not had an opportunity (yet) to make any of their own. Hiwot was very aware of this.

When we pulled out the stockings, she again was painfully aware that her stocking was not in the stack. "Where's mine?".

I have been busy knitting stockings for Hiwot and Tesfaye and now am extra motivated to get them done quickly. We will also get started on ornaments this year and may make a few extra with Hiwot and Tesfaye (we can have big kid handprints on our tree too!) to make up for missed years.

Soon we'll have a lot to show when asked: "Where's mine?".

Big Hill Pond

We like to have fun-family-time on the weekends . . . typically outside the home: park, playground, museum, road-trip, zoo, etc. After a long school week, we are all ready for a fun break, and when it's nice outside, we definitely want to stay outdoors. As an added bonus, we are usually successful in tiring out the kids which translates to a good night sleep for everyone :)
We are trying to be especially intentional about getting out and about while Amy is still able (before pregnancy bed-rest restrictions).

This weekend, we took a day trip to Big Hill Pond State Park, located on the Tennessee Mississippi border. We packed a picnic lunch, let the kids run wild on a great playground, then hiked along the edge of Big Hill Pond Lake . . . the kids all slept very well later :)
The park has over 30-miles of trails, including over-night hikes. We are looking forward to returning and exploring a bit more of this beautiful park.

Cast Party

Monday morning, one month after his Green-Banks tendon transfer surgery, we returned to Memphis for our second post-op visit . . . and to get the cast OFF!!!!

Davis had been counting down to this big day and was super pumped. The cast-cutting saw was a little loud and intimidating, but after hearing it won't hurt but may tickle, he giggled the entire time. The surgical site is still tender but is healing very well. Davis was hesitant to move his right arm, but was able to squeeze our doctor's with surprising strength. Over these next few weeks, we'll have extensive occupational and physical therapy (3x per week) to gently work and strengthen his right arm: shoulder, elbow and wrist.

The biggest news: Davis can now hold his right hand/wrist perfectly straight!!!
Praise God!!!

After the cast removal, we spent the day in Memphis celebrating: Abyssinia Ethiopian food and the Memphis Zoo (where we practically had the entire zoo to ourselves!).

The cast if off . . . replaced by an awesome brace and accompanied with 2-3 therapy sessions per week for the next month. Road to healing, here we come!

Full-Term Hopes

We feel incredibly blessed to be expecting our 8th child (5th pregnancy). With each pregnancy, it is our desire to carry a healthy baby full-term (37+ weeks). Unfortunately for us, this has not come easy.

Many women are fortunate enough to be able to complain of a seemingly never-ending pregnancy and easily carry their babies past 40 weeks. I wish it was that easy for me. But, for some reason, that was not a part of God's plan for my previous pregnancies.

I am not alone. 1 in 8 pregnancies end in pre-term labor and delivery.

All of my pregnancies have been healthy and easy . . . they just tend to end a bit early.
My first child, Hendrick, arrived at 37 weeks. Davis surprised us with an early arrival at 31 weeks. My last two, Maegli and Kolpin, both arrived at 36 weeks (after weeks of bedrest and interventions to prevent pre-term labor). Three of our four previous births are technically considered premature.

I don't know why my babies tend to come early. We may never know why Davis arrived at 31 weeks. But I do know that once one arrives premature, the risk of subsequent babies arriving early is greatly increased. For some reason, my body wants to bring babies early.
I also know that the longer at baby remains in-utero, the better.

The last few weeks of a pregnancy are incredibly important to the development of a baby's lungs, brain and liver, eyes and ears. 39+ weeks of gestation are ideal. This we have learned first hand. All of our babies have had initial trouble eating (the suck and swallow pattern), one had minor breathing and body heat regulation trouble, two required NICU stays, and one has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Premature babies are at increased risk for newborn health complication. The earlier the baby is born, the greater the risk. They also face an increased risk of lasting disabilities: learning and behavior problems, cerebral palsy, lung problem, hearing and vision loss, diabetes, heart disease.

We are believing God for a miracle in this pregnancy. We are praying God will keep this precious child in-utero for 38+ weeks (longer than I have ever carried a baby).

As would any parent, I will do anything I can to give my child the best chance possible. I am working closely with our midwife to achieve a healthy pregnancy.

Nutrition (healthy iron levels: anemia is linked to preterm labor, 60-90g of protein daily: to strengthen the uterus, micro-nutrients and plenty of dark leafy greens: to keep me in optimal health, weight-gain: 30-45 pounds recommended for me!).
Progesterone (17P shots and natural progesterone cream, effective in extending pregnancy)
Body alignment and Pelvic Floor strengthening (to lift the weight of the baby up and off the cervix by strengthening the muscles of the pelvic floor).

Looking ahead, we are also discussing natural ways to stop contractions and prevent early labor: glass of wine, warm bath, herbal remedies. We are planning for a few weeks of bed rest to help us achieve our goal of 38 weeks.

We are doing what we can to set ourselves up for the greatest chance of success with this pregnancy. But, above all these minor variables we can control, we know there is much that is beyond our control.
We put our trust in God. We know the ultimate healer, our great God, can help my body carry this baby to term. He alone knows why my previous babies have come early; if it is His plan, He has the power to keep this baby in-utero 38 weeks and beyond.
There is comfort in the truth that God knows this child; He meticulously formed this baby, knows this baby's name and intimately knows this baby's future.

Whether the arrival is considered early or late, this baby will be on time in God's big plan.
God has a plan for this precious child.

We praise God for the incredible blessing of pregnancy.
Every child is precious to Him.

Scout Camp Out

Our family tagged along on a Cub Scout camp out: a weekend outdoors enjoying the beautiful Fall weather at Mousetail Landing State Park.

The scouts raced through a 3-mile ridge hike, swung from tree vines, played aggressive games of Frisbee and football, caught ladybugs and lizards, cooked food over the fire, learned footprint identification from a Park Ranger, and held a Sunday morning fire-side worship service.

We love that scouting gets these boys outside and welcomes families to tag along!

Out of Town

When Daddy has to work out of town, we hang out of town . . . in Cincinnati!

Last week Amy and the kids took a road trip to Cincinnati to be completely spoiled by family for a few days.

We spent time with Grandpa (Mike's Dad) swinging outside:

We went to the Children's Museum at Union Terminal and got energy out with ball play, climbing the gigantic tree house, and splashing in water:

And enjoyed the golf driving range, the bowling ally, Skyline chili, and making music with Grandpa (Amy's dad):

It was a very busy and very wonderful week in Cincinnati - a welcome fun break from our normal routine.
Thanks to all the grandparents for thoroughly spoiling us all!

Now we are thankful to be back home with Daddy!!!!!

The Bump - 24 weeks

Woo hoo!!! We are two months into the 2011/2012 school year at Parvae Vitae Academy and still going strong.

This month we chugged away learning more Medieval History: Studying European Knights and jousting tournaments, the expanding Islamic Empire, Pilgrimages, the power of the Pope, Holy Wars, Crusaders and Richard the Lionhearted; and then we jumped over to Asia to learn of the Mongol Warriors and Genghis Khan, the Yamata Dynasty of Japan and the travels of Marco Polo. The boys have thoroughly enjoyed learning of all the fierce warriors! We hosted our own live jousting tournaments and created scenes with knight figurines, played peasant games and kneaded bread, ate Japanese food and created maps of Marco Polo's extensive travels. We are also learning to tell time (Tesfaye), to skip count (Davis), and basic Algebra (Hendrick). We created Minoan fresco art and our very own Egyptian wall mural, featuring lakes (with Egyptian war ships), fish, four suns, warriors and Daddy cutting down a tree. We have spent time in devotionals focused on God's promises and His absolute faithfulness as we read about Abraham. We have learned new songs and perfected shaking our rattles to the beat. We are plugging away at phonics programs, learning about nouns, and trying to keep our fast reading 7-year-old stocked with new materials. We hung a solar system above our table and have learned the first five planets (the boys have some impressive stats), and are humbled and amazed at how perfectly God designed Earth for our home.

The little ones have enjoyed joining us for art and music and read-aloud couch cuddle time.

We've hit a pretty good school grove and are plugging away at a good pace. We are working hard to keep things fresh, the learning fun and the kids interested with lots of hands on activities, manipulatives, mixed teaching styles, and special field trips.
It was especially important for us to have a good start to this school year and set ourselves up for a several week, mid-year break, knowing our world will be slightly rocked with the coming arrival of baby #8.

Here we go! "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming . . ."

Pumpkins

Each Fall, we look forward to our trip to our local Pumpkin Patch. This year, our special traditions have had the added fun element of being "firsts" for Hiwot and Tesfaye.

Our silly group had fun racing around the piles of pumpkins with their wagons, exploring the interesting gourds, and picking out perfect pumpkins. We came home with a few to carve, one each to paint, and a bunch of small gourds for our Community Group kids project.

The fun continues even home from the Pumpkin Patch!

6 Months Home

Our most recent family additions have been home for 6 months!

As I know we've said before, it's hard to believe it's been that long: the time has absolutely flown by, seeming like just yesterday when we arrived back in the USA with our darling new daughter and son . . . but I also can't seem to remember our lives without these two additions. They are family.
We love these kids!!!

Hiwot's wild and fun personality has fully emerged at home. She is the life of the party . . . and at our house, it's a party everyday! She is still a bit shy with new people in new environments, but by the third visit, her fun personality fully emerges.

. Chatterbox and giggly-girl .
. Self dresser (preferably a pink dress with matching pink panties, pink socks and pink shoes) .
. Loves to have her hair done (conditioned, brushed and styled) .
. Constant ballerina . Star singer . Make-believe character play (she's "Tiger Lily") .
. Caring "mama" to her baby (either her doll or her "baby Maegli") .
. Master blanket fort builder . Circle dance leader . Super Snuggler .
. Silly faces . Plays with Mommy's hair . Kitchen helper . Master Chef in her own play kitchen .
. Artist in Residence (covering our fridge with new creations each day) .
. Athletic and coordinated - a superb runner and scooter rider . Joker .

Our sweet girl, Hiwot, doesn't respond well to correction, retreating to her "shell" when she thinks she's in trouble: we hold her close wanting her to know above all else that WE LOVE HER. We have recently learned a bit from the kids about past discipline experiences which helps us to understand her retreating reflex and her tendency to hide incriminating evidence (wet sheets and PJs hidden under the bed, and 3 bunches of banana peels hidden in the closet!). We pray that God will work to heal her and help us to love her through this fear.

Her language development is astounding! She speaks English with a Tennessee accent (!) and very advanced sentence structure. She is on target for an average American 4-year-old, which is quite amazing considering English is her third language and she's only been speaking it for 6 months. Talking to speech specialist about this accomplishment, we believe it's because she's at the prime age for language development.

We are really pleased with our bonding status just 6 months into the process (the road to attachment can be long). Her shyness towards others and sense of security in our arms are very good signs. She seeks us for comfort and loves to give and receive hugs and kisses. She is a happy girl.

The seven siblings have developed very strong bonds. They are truly each others favorite playmate, partners in crime, and best friends - it's beautiful to see! Hiwot and Maegli are especially close. We love watching the girls run off together across a field hand-in-hand; practicing their graceful dancing; and playing "mama", where they take turns being "mama" or "baby" with the "mama" tenderly caring for her "baby" (tucking her into bed, reading stories, spoon feeding). So sweet! Hiwot is especially excited for our new baby to arrive. She is confident we're having a girl (we'll see!) and has decided she will be sharing her bed with the new baby :)

She has gained 4 pounds and grown 3 inches since arriving home.

::: Tesfaye :::

Tesfaye has developed into such a wonderful big brother with a true servant's heart. Our sweet boy delights in helping others; it is an incredible blessing to have a child with this gift! He is naturally easy-going and always ready to have fun.

Tesfaye perfectly fits his role as the second eldest boy in our family. He is a great younger brother to Hendrick: wanting to be with him constantly, playing and learning from him. The two are incredibly close. While Hendrick is still the "big boy" of the house, Tesfaye is an incredibly wonderful big brother to his five younger siblings. He is always helping the little kids: assisting with shoes and jackets, helping them to buckle seat-belts in the van, volunteering to fold their laundry and make their beds. He seems to get such joy from serving his family. He is especially fond and caring of Kolpin (the feeling is mutual). I love watching him walking with Kolpin trailing along beside hand-in-hand, encouraging him along the way. He's also working hard to teach Kolpin the game of soccer!

He is the most determined and diligent student at his school work. We have learned that while he is very quick to say he understands, he's usually too quick. He is just so eager to learn and wants so much to "get it" and to please us. He will patiently work on a single math problem for 30 minutes or more and then is super proud of himself when he has the correct solution; and takes nearly an hour to complete a sheet of letter copywork, laboriously forming each letter shape. I am amazed at his determination! Schooling is not easy for him, but he is a very hard worker and very proud of his accomplishments. While we were hoping to get him reading soon, we are realizing his language comprehension is a major stumbling block: he has quickly learned the sounds of each letter, but has no word recognition. We are thankful we are homeschooling Tesfaye and are able to readjust our teaching and work with him to help him be successful in his learning. And fortunately, he enjoys school. We hope he always will!

Understandably, Tesfaye thinks a lot about his early life. We are glad feels free to talk to us about his experiences and his feelings and we do our best to encourage this communication. We want Tesfaye to know it's okay to miss Sidama; to miss his family and friends and old life. He has opened up so much more. He wants to return to Sidama when he is older (and we are all hoping to visit again in the future). He nobly desires to return to help that region and provide money for his village. We have talked a lot about the plans God may have for him in his birth country. I can't wait to see how God may use my precious son to make an impact in Sidama.

Tesfaye is still speaking a very broken, heavily accented English, but has made huge progress in his communication skills and understanding. Language doesn't hold him back with people. He is incredibly easy-going and very quick to jump into a new crowd and made friends. He is comfortable with people.
He is very loving child, preferring to spend quality time with us (especially Daddy :)
Tesfaye is such a joy and a delight, truly a special boy!

He has gained 12 pounds (!) and grown 3-1/2 inches since coming home.

Cast Countdown

The countdown is on . . . 21 days to go before the Super Camouflage Cast comes off!

We met with Davis' Orthopedic Surgeon yesterday for a 10-day-post-op-appointment. Everything looks great, and (big deal!!!) Davis can effortlessly wiggle and straighten his fingers on his right hand! (We are also pleased Davis is finally self-weening off the powerful pain medications.) Praise God for this quick healing!!!
The cast is not holding Davis back from being a normal, active, rough-and-tumble 5-year-old . . . and he has quickly learned his arm is now a powerful weapon (watch out!).

Since everything is going so well, Davis will only need to be cast for one month! Only three more weeks wearing this large itchy cast, then we move to a wrist brace accompanied with lots of Occupational Therapy.

To help mark our final days of cast wearing, we made a paper chain (in army colors, of course) - Davis can take a link off each day and countdown to the big day!

Our Black "Olive" has been with our family 7 years this month!

We are still missing our beloved Chaska, but so very thankful for our sweet pup Olive.
She enjoys lots of attention from the kiddos :)

The boys take charge of feeding her, bathing her, and have even started helping with haircuts.
She always stays close-by when kids are playing outside, and loves to play catch.
Inside, she curls up near the kids on the carpet and loves to sneak into their beds.
She also knows to position herself beneath Kolpin for meals, he is most likely to accidentally feed her!
Olive is a truly wonderful family pet.

Recently, Hiwot has been the biggest Olive fan - she loves curling up on the floor and petting our pup.
This is incredible considering 5 months ago, Hiwot would jump up screaming whenever Olive moved.

Out of Town Help

With Davis' scheduled surgery last week and our anticipated couple days in Memphis, Grandpa (Amy's Dad) drove down to come to our rescue and take care of things on the home front while we were away. We thoroughly enjoyed having Grandpa with us for five days; having fun all together for a few, and then leaving him for three days as he bravely (and expertly) took on the four youngest by himself.

Grandpa is famous in our house for his magic tricks! He has barely exited his car upon arrival before the kids were clambering "do a magic trick, Grandpa!" Besides magic tricks, Grandpa kept the kids thoroughly entertained and busy with special luches (and outdoor play-lands), wiffle ball in the backyard, neighborhood walks, playground outings, library story-time, and so much more. . . all while taking care of our dog and household cleaning. We have a Super Grandpa!

Davis' surgical experience: Green Banks Transfer to correct a symptom of his mild Cerebral Palsy

Thursday morning (October 13th), while still dark outside, we (Mike and Amy) traveled to Memphis with Davis for his pre-op appointment. The remainder of the day was full of fun: Children's Museum of Memphis, Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant, Memphis Zoo, then snuggling together while enjoying pizza and Disney movies in our hotel . . . it was so special to have this time with our sweet boy.

Friday (October 14th), we woke at 4:45 AM to enjoy a final beverage before surgery (Root Beer, his special drink of choice), then headed over to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital for our 7:00 surgery check-in. We rested in the waiting room for 1-1/2 hours, Davis snuggling with Mommy and watching cartoons, Daddy sleeping. At 8:30 we were called back and Davis got to walk the "toy hallway" to choose a special toy - he immediately picked out a set of green army men! In pre-op, we met with the anesthesiologist and Davis' surgeon (who initialed the correct wrist for surgery), changed him into his blue gown, and Davis picked out his cast color (army camouflage). He was oblivious to everything, completely happy to be playing with his new army set, and really excited for his new cast. We prayed over our boy before they led him back for anesthesia (he chose bubblegum scent). It was so sweet watching him skipping along, holding the nurse's hand and carrying his sheep, blanket, and one of Mommy's "soft shirts". He was so excited and couldn't wait to wake up with his new cast!

The surgery began at 10:00 and was quicker than originally anticipated, only 1-1/2 hours long. Davis had a Green Banks Transfer (Flexor carpi ulnaris tendon transfer) of the tendon on his right wrist to release the tight tendon pulling his hand down and to the right (a symptom of his mild Cerebral Palsy) and transferring it from the palm side to the back, to pull up the hand. Ideally this surgery will allow him to hold his wrist at a more neutral position and give him a more "normal" range of motion for that hand. Former common activities which had been awkward or impossible for Davis to perform will hopefully be made easier with the transfer of this tendon.

At 11:30 AM, we met with Davis' surgeon for a post-surgery consultation, who was very pleased and very optimistic for the outcome. Davis will be in a full-arm hard cast for 4-6 weeks, necessary for holding the arm completely still while the tendons are healing. The rigorous occupational therapy will begin later, first we need to help our boy heal.
We were led back to recovery just as Davis was waking from the anesthesia. Our poor boy was very disoriented and in a lot of pain - it was very hard to see him suffering. We pulled him onto our laps and held him tight through the first hour as he fluctuated between sleeping and crying. We were unsuccessful in our attempts to get him to drink liquids. Finally he was able to communicate that his arm hurt. Two doses of morphine took the edge of the pain enough for him to calm down and eat an orange popsicle. "I want my cast off" - the coveted cast was now seen as the cause for his discomfort and pain and he just wanted it off!

At 2:15 PM we were finally transferred to his hospital room (903) - the surgeon wanted to keep Davis for 23-hour observation, which allows for the surgery to still be considered "out-patient" while enabling the hospital staff to monitor his pain. Davis was exited to be able to choose his own food from the call-in-order menu: chocolate milk, pineapple, and Rice Krispie treat; and to have control over the TV from his big bed. He was pretty miserable for the first few hours, but perked up significantly by 6:00 PM. He played with his army men, climbed onto the window sill to look out over downtown Memphis, watched several movies (and a baseball playoff game) and enjoyed more chocolate milk and pineapple for dinner. Our biggest obstacle was keeping the cast arm elevated to reduce the swelling of his right fingers and keeping Davis comfortable. Davis was also very ready for his IV port to be removed, poor boy had two arms in pain. He needed a few more doses of pain medication to help him throughout the night, which he gagged down in tears.

Saturday morning, Davis was still uncomfortable and very ready to go home. Unfortunately we had to wait a long time for our discharge orders and paperwork to be completed. Davis ate more chocolate milk and pineapple (the only food that appealed to him), watched more movies, played with the army men, napped and rested, and explored the hospital. The longer we waited though, the worse he felt - he just needed to be home!
Finally at 2:00 PM, the orders came through and we were ready to leave, with cast care instructions and prescriptions for pain medicines. Our puny boy, jumped up and practically ran the entire way to the car (stopping at the hospital gift shop for his free gift - a plush duck - on the way out) - he was so excited!

Davis slept the whole way home, but upon arrival this afternoon, jumped out to excitedly show off his new army cast to all of his siblings and very happy to be home.
We couldn't be more proud of how strong and brave (and sweet) our boy was throughout this surgical experience. He was wonderful!

Looking back, he said he wants to go to a hospital again - it's a relief that he has positive memories from his time at Le Bonheur (that may have something to do with free gifts, chocolate milk and pineapple, and a TV above the hospital bed). We were very impressed with the care we received from the doctors and nursing staff at Le Bonheur - we are very thankful for their help and kindness in caring for our precious boy.

We are incredibly grateful for the help of friends and family for taking care of the home front while were were tending to Davis in Memphis. We are thankful for their willingness, availability and flexibility (until the day before we left town, we were only expecting a single night away from home - with the added 23-hour watch, we were gone for three days and two nights). Hendrick and Tesfaye had a ball staying with friends and were thrilled to have them cheering at their final soccer game. Grandpa (Amy's Dad) bravely took on the youngest four: Burke, Hiwot, Maegli, and Kolpin at our home, and was fantastic caring for and spoiling them as only a Grandpa can do (story-time, magic tricks, special meals, play ground, and decorating the house for Davis' homecoming). All of our kids has a very special three days. Thank you!!!
We are so pleased to all be home together again.

We would certainly appreciate your prayers as Davis recovers from this surgery: we are praying for full healing of the tendons and successful outcome of the tendon transfer; we are praying for a relief from pain and swelling and for comfort in his cast these next 4-6 weeks. God is the ultimate and mighty Physician and Healer, we are believing Him to heal our strong, brave boy.

Dance Class

We got to see ballerinas!

The girls' Ballet Studio allows parents to come visit class once each semester. Up until this, we have helped our girls put on their tap shoes and watched them file into class toting along their ballet slippers, then waited to greet our dancers as they ran out of the room 30 minutes later giggling with stories of skipping, twirling, and falling down.

But this week, us parents lined the mirror wall to watch our girls in action. Their instructor warned us that sometimes these little ones freeze when there is an audience ("there are too many eyes!"), but with this giggly bunch of 3 and 4-year-olds, she didn't think there would be any problem.

The beauties started out with a darling tap routine to "Good Ship Lollipop", then learned a few new dance moves: "peanut butter", "sweep the floor" (shuffle, step) - their teacher was wonderful making everything so much fun for the girls (and now all of their stories made so much more sense to us!)
Next was ballet. The girls lined up and took turns sashaying and skipping across the floor. Then they worked on keeping their heels "kissing", complete with plenty of kissing sounds (first position) and moving their arms in different graceful poses.

This was definitely a group of hams! It was wonderful seeing our girls having so much fun at their ballet class. We were so proud to watch our ballerinas!
(and our cheeks were sore after class from all of our smiling and laughing :)

Home Stretch

We are in the home stretch of soccer season.
Each team only has one remaining game for this year (followed by the all important pizza party!).

With surgery scheduled for later this week, this recent game was Davis' final for the season.
We have enjoyed watching Davis and Burke playing together this year.

We took our kids to the farm . . . E -I-E-I-O!

The kids had a ball playing at Donnell Century Farm! This local farm opens their 1,000+ acre property October weekends for families to enjoy their Farm Adventure and learn a bit about farm life, farm animals, and farm food.

We stayed busy Saturday afternoon with their cornbox, big slide, hayride, straw climb, corn maze, tractor tire playground, cotton jump, feeding barnyard animals, and collecting food for our baskets (apples, eggs, potatoes, cotton, milk). It was a fun afternoon of farm learning.

SNAKES

Snakes found in our bathroom, or newly labeled: "Snake Room" - eeek!

Snakes in the yard are good, snakes in the house . . . not so much. We've found three snakes in our bathroom in the past week. I wonder how they're getting in . . . and how many there are?
I am very thankful for brave boys who can capture these snakes and return them to the yard - which is where they belong, outside!

Change is Coming

In one week, our sweet boy's life will be a little different.

Friday, Davis will undergo surgery on his right wrist. His folded, "broken wing" hand will be surgically straightened with a re-wiring of the tendons in his wrist.
I am excited for him, and the impact on his life this change has the potential to make . . . but I will miss his sweet bent wrist.

Davis has had a folded hand since infancy (a result of his mild Cerebral Palsy). He first crawled not on the palm, but on the back of his right hand. He sleeps with his curled wrist tucked in his shirt, carrying it like a broken wing.

This tight bend has made writing, holding a bat or ball glove, and giving high-five a challenge, especially with his natural inclination towards right-hand dominance. While Davis has adapted to this limitation amazingly well, this surgery has potential to dramatically change the quality of his life. This surgery will make my little man so much stronger.

After surgery, Davis will be sporting an awesome full-arm cast for 6-8 weeks. He is very excited to have it decorated by family and friends. Once the cast comes off, the long road to recovery begins. Davis will be working very hard therapy these next few months to strengthen and re-learn to live with and use new full-range-motion wrist to its full potential.

We are believing God to work a miracle in our little boy's wrist.
We pray for His guidance over the hands of the surgical team, and for His protection over our Davis.

Mammoth

This past weekend, our family spent two nights camping at Mammoth Cave National Park, along with Uncle Dann and Aunt Julie (and dog Charlie).

Three tents, 6 picnic tables, a fire ring, and an entire group camp site to ourselves . . . accessible by ferry boat! The kids had a ball rolling their construction trucks around the site, perfecting marshmallow shooters, running around with glow sticks, playing with fire, and taking turns walking the dogs (our Olive and Charlie). We feasted delicious fire-cooked meals, and layered-up to keep warm in the 38-65 degree temps. The big boys, Hendrick and Tesfaye, were proud to have their very own tent at night, while Mom and Dad and the other five kids snuggled together against the cold night in our big tent.

Saturday, we hiked a 2-mile trail above the caves, while our scouts worked hard to earn their Cub Scout Hiking belt loop and pin, along with earning the Junior Ranger National Park Badge. After lunch, we ventured below ground, taking all seven kids on a 90 minute cave tour. The kids were amazed at the "mammoth" size of cave passages.

Mammoth Cave is the world's largest cave system with nearly 400 miles of explored passages. It believed the actual size could be twice that, as their are yet many unexplored parts. Since the early 1800's, guided tours have taken curious visitors inside this amazing underground maze. We chose an easy, introductory tour for the kids, but Hendrick is already excited to return for a more challenging, longer, belly-crawl-involving tour when he is old enough.
The hiking trails on the surface of the park are fabulous. While we only explored a very small portion of the park's 78 miles of trails, we were able to see where the River Stix exits the cave system to feed the Green River, Cave Island, and Dixon Cave (originally connected to Mammoth until a sink hole separated the two and opened up an entrance into Mammoth).

We had a wonderful weekend at the park and thoroughly enjoyed our special time with Uncle Dann and Aunt Julie. We are looking forward to coming back to explore more of amazing Mammoth Cave National Park.

One Month In

Parvae Vitae Academy, 2011-2012, has gotten off to a great start.

We still haven't mastered the school day schedule (will we ever?), our school table is always piled with papers and books and projects (a new normal), and we're struggling to stay on top of it all . . . but a lot of learning (and fun) is happening in our household.

We've spent hours snuggled together reading on the couch; we're learning about God's awesome creation as we read Genesis daily and study astronomy and our universe; we've made masterpieces with crayons, pastels, glue sticks, clay, paper tiles, and cut cardboard; we've crafted and fought with cardboard scimitars, decorated clay pots, and pieced together byzantine mosaics; we've traveled back in time to learn about the Middle Ages, focusing on the Byzantine Empire and the rise of Islam on the Arabian peninsula; we're learning about the caste system, creating our own coats of arms, reading knights tales and juggling like a court jester; we sang songs, beat rhythms on our knees, and danced around the house to the music; we're working to master skip-counting, basic addition, and (gasp!) multiplication; we copied songs from "The Hobbit" to practice our handwriting; we're learning the grammar rules of a sentence; and we've pieced together several puzzles and played tons of logic building games.

We're off to a very good start . . . one month in, eight months to go!

Byzantine Mosaics

Apple Picking

Last weekend we made our annual trek to Breeden's Orchard for September apple picking! It's a fantastic learning opportunity to gather our own apples from an apple orchard - it is so important for our kids to see from where our food comes . . . plus it's so much fun!

This year, we had 6 fantastic apple pickers (utilizing proper technique) and one ground clearer (Kolpin!). We still have a bit more learning to do, our kids seemed determined to gather the smallest apples on the tree - "baby apple, hahaha!". Maybe next year we can fill our baskets with nice big, plump apples!

Now it's time to get busy canning apple jelly and apple sauce to enjoy this coming year!

Update: we've put our 15 pounds of apples and 5 gallons of blueberries to good use!
This week we were busy canning spiced apple sauce, apple jelly, blueberry jelly, and blueberry-apple jelly. Our "picking" outings have provided us with jelly for the coming year!
